November Book Recommendations
These books might offer some perspective as you head into the colder months and reflect on mortality. These books will cause you to reevaluate the way in which you view the world. While at times challenging to stomach, they give infinite perspective and moments for reflection. Highly recommend annotating these - I did and thoroughly enjoyed it for the first time ever.
Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
I know…I’m very behind…I get it. I recommended Gilbert’s City of Girls last month because I’m obsessed with her writing, so I had to read her most famous book. As someone struggling with identity, her candor and humor regarding her search for faith and self was incredibly comforting and guiding. If you haven’t read it yet, do it. You’ll fly through it.
The Course of Love by Alain De Botton
This book is so incredibly moving. It traces a relationship from the beginning; everywhere from falling in love to infidelity. It discusses the emotions of both parties during incredibly difficult times in a relationship and gives you perspective on your relationships with simple elegant rhetoric. Just beautiful.
Love Is A Dog From Hell by Charles Bukowski
Charles Bukowski is undoubtably a controversial figure. As a proud feminist who lives and breathes women’s rights, it seems strange that I would read poetry where women’s heads are described as “empty great mountains.” - pretty, but nothing to it. However in my opinion, throughout this collection, you can see a clear struggle from Bukowski as his narrator seems to fall in love and struggles with evaluating a woman’s true worth as his convictions are challenged. In any sense, it’s always interesting to read from a different perspective.
