“if science and karma could team up…”

I’m sure by now you’ve seen the SNL cold open mocking the monstrosity that was the first Presidential debate…if you can even call it “presidential” or a “debate” for that matter. Jim Carrey, who absolutely BODIED his impression of Joe, says at the end of the debate, after literally putting Trump on pause (which I did multiple times over the course of that nationally televised temper tantrum from POTUS),

“Now just imagine if science and karma could somehow team up to send us all a message about how dangerous this virus can be. I’m not saying I want it to happen, but just imagine if it did.”

I really had to keep the latter piece of this in mind this week when on a plane to the midwest. I listened to 2 passengers behind me complain that the virus is a hoax concocted by the Democrats to hold us hostage…which is just….so beyond any legitimate logic or knowledge it makes my brain want to tear in two.

People who consistently go against the legitimacy of the virus really make my blood boil. Try telling the children who lost a parent that this is a hoax. Try telling the grandkids who never got to say goodbye to their heroes that this is not a big deal. I want people who refuse to wear a mask and proactively refuse the nonexistent vaccine, to look a family directly in the eye who have an empty seat at the table and use the president’s words, “Don’t let it control you.”

This virus has revealed just how truly selfish or selfless our society can be. You can either decide to protect others’ lives in addition to your own by simply wearing a mask, or you can claim that your liberties are taken from you. You can be selfless by protecting life, or be selfish by claiming that this is discrimination (which by the way, if you’re making this claim you clearly have never been discriminated against.)

And before you even go there, no, I do not wish this virus on anyone; even those who have decided they’re above wearing a mask and above caring for others. No one deserves to lose a friend, a family member, or loved one. However, I can’t say I will feel a lot of sympathy for those who suffer this virus from a combination of science and karma, because they decided they were smarter than the scientists and public health officials. I can’t say I feel a lot of sympathy for POTUS who claims to be a Pro-Life President, yet openly mocks Joe Biden’s mask wearing (which protects the sanctity of other lives AKA entire purpose of the movement), denied the seriousness of a virus that has already taken more than 210,000 lives, and exposed dozens of WH officials to the virus.

Sometimes science and karma do team up. Clearly, they were really in cahoots this past week. However, the blame shouldn’t be on science. The blame shouldn’t be on karma. The blame should be on an outright refusal to protect each other. The blame should be on an attitude of selfish entitlement instilled in American society for the last 4 years by a pompous showman who doesn’t care about anyone but himself.

When we go to the polls this November, or place our ballot in a mailbox, or drop it off in a secure location, we need to think about what is missing in society today and what we have in place of it. We’ve lost the value of compassion and in turn placed an emphasis on self-servitude. If you care at all to restore decency and unity, you won’t vote for another 4 years of this nonsense.
